Don Lane of Lane TV & Satellite installing a HughesNet high-speed internet service satellite. Through the New York Broadband Program, people who live in remote areas of the state who don’t receive broadband internet service can receive the HughesNet equipment without paying to lease or purchase. For rural residents who live outside of areas where broadband fiber optic cables have been installed, there is at least one option available to acquire high-speed internet.

The other option is satellite internet, which residents in areas with out broadband access can receive with financial assistance from New York state.

In 2015, Gov. Andrew Cuomo established the $500 million New York Broadband program. The program provides state grant funding through a reverse auction method to support projects that deliver high-speed internet access to underserved areas of New York state at speeds of 100 megabits-per-second in most areas and 25 megabits-per-second in the most remote areas.

Because of Cuomo’s initiative, the state Broadband Program Office has teamed with HughesNet (an EchoStar company) to provide service to the unreachable households. Because HughesNet does not require a hardline to transfer data, it can be used in outlying areas where cable and fiber-optic lines don’t exist. The only requirements for HughesNet high-speed internet service are an open view to the southern sky and a typical power outlet. Currently HughesNet has 1.2 million subscribers nationwide.

One of the installers of HughesNet equipment is Don Lane of Lane TV & Satellite. Lane said starting on March 28, new subscribers for the satellite internet who live in unserved an underserved can receive the equipment without purchasing or leasing thanks to the state’s Broadband Program Office partnering with HughesNet.

Lane said people can call him at 1-888-287-7115  to see if they qualify for the state’s broadband program. He said some of the municipalities where he has installed HughesNet equipment that qualifies for the state broadband program is in Cassadaga, Clymer, Gerry, Sinclairville and Stockton, to name a few of the areas.

Along with not having to purchase or lease the equipment, there is also no background check for people who qualify for the service. Lane also said the monthly payment for the high-speed internet services is cheaper than most fiber optic broadband plans.

“It is a limited time program. I don’t know when it is done. I guess it depends on when the funding runs out,” he said.

While the state’s goal is for most areas to have internet speeds of 100 megabits-per-second, the HughesNet service will have speeds of about 25 megabits-per-second, which is also state official’s goal for remote areas of the state.
